A healthcare team is a multidisciplinary group of professionals working collaboratively to provide high-quality patient care. Each member plays a distinct role and brings specialized training to the team. Over the years, additional specialties have evolved and sometimes patients are uncertain of the staff members’ roles and responsibilities. Regardless of where you are being treated, whether it be in a hospital, urgent care center, physician’s office or in a long-term care/ rehabilitation facility, you will meet a variety of health care workers. Here is a summary of the various roles of a health care team and what responsibilities they have in patient care.
Physicians
Qualifications:
· Medical Degree (MD or DO)
· Completion of residency training
· State licensure
· Board certification in a specialty (optional but common)
Role:
· Diagnose and treat illnesses
· Develop treatment plans
· Prescribe medications
· Perform surgeries and procedures
Nurses
Qualifications:
· LPN/LVN: Completion of a practical nursing program, licensure
· RN: Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing, NCLEX-RN
· Nurse Practitioner (NP): Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing, board certification
Role:
· Monitor patient health
· Administer treatments and medications
· Educate patients and families
· Coordinate care
· NPs can diagnose and prescribe independently in many settings
Pharmacists
Qualifications:
· Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
· Licensure through national and state exams
Role:
· Dispense and review medications
· Provide drug therapy consultations
· Ensure patient safety regarding drug use
Physician Assistants (PAs)
Qualifications:
· Master’s degree from an accredited PA program
· Certification (PANCE) and state licensure
Role:
· Conduct physical exams
· Diagnose and treat illnesses
· Prescribe medications (in collaboration with a physician)
· Assist in surgeries
Certified Medical Assistants (CMA)
Qualifications:
· Training course and passing an exam for certification
Role:
· Perform administrative and routine clinical tasks in various health care settings.
· Work under the supervision of physicians and Registered NursesCertified Nursing Assistants (CNA)
Qualifications:
· Completing and passing a course for certificationRole:
· Provide direct patient care, assist with daily activities, and supporting the nursing staff.
· Work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in hospitals, retirement communities and homecare
Allied Health Professionals
Qualifications:
· Varies by specialty (typically Associate to Master’s degree and certification)
Role:
· Physical Therapists (PTs): Restore mobility and physical function
· Occupational Therapists (OTs): Assist with daily living activities
· Respiratory Therapists (RTs): Manage breathing disorders
· Medical Technologists: Analyze lab samples for diagnosis
Social Workers
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s or Master’s in Social Work
· Clinical licensure for therapeutic roles
Role:
· Address social, emotional, and financial aspects of care
· Provide counseling and crisis support
· Assist with discharge planning and community resources
Dietitians/Nutritionists
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in nutrition or dietetics
· Registered Dietitian (RD) credential, state licensure if required
Role:
· Assess dietary needs
· Create and manage nutrition plans
· Support medical conditions through diet
Administrative and Support Staff
Qualifications:
· Varies by position; may include degrees, certifications, or on-the-job training
Role:
· Manage patient scheduling and medical records
· Handle billing and insurance
· Provide clerical and operational support
