Safety Tips for Senior Driving

Having the ability to drive safely is a big factor in staying independent. Senior drivers are the most experienced drivers but changes with aging can bring some challenges when driving.  Here are some safety tips to consider.

1.  Schedule regular vision and hearing exams.  Certain conditions can make it more difficult to see when driving at night or to hear outside noises such as sirens.

2.  Plan ahead.  Know the routes you need to take.  Driving during daylight hours  may be better if your night vision is impaired. Avoid high traffic times and check routes for congestions, accidents and weather conditions before you leave. Take frequent breaks to avoid becoming fatigued.

3.  Know your physical limitations.  Do you have trouble getting your foot from the gas pedal to the brake?  Do you have difficulty turning your head to see traffic or other obstacles on the side such as cars or people coming out of driveways?  Many cars today now come with back up cameras and other built in safety features to help with better visibility and braking.

4.  Keep a safe distance when following other vehicles.

5.  Minimize distractions such as phones, loud music, eating while driving or excessive or distracting  conversation. Stay focused on the road at all times.

6.  Stay physically active.  Driving takes coordination and strength. Regular exercise helps with coordination and keeping reflexes sharp.

7.  Keep your car in good condition.  Regular inspections of brakes, tires, windshield wipers are all important. Keep your car running properly with regular maintenance.

8.  Understand your medications.  Some medications can cause drowsiness and slower reaction times.  Discuss your medications with your health care provider or pharmacist.

9. Consider taking a driving refresher course.  Organizations such as AAA, AARP, Seniors for Safe Driving offer classes that refresh your knowledge of newer driving laws,  how to adapt to age related changes and learn about new vehicle technologies and more.  Some offer classes online.  And your car insurance provider may offer you a discount on your rates if you complete one of these courses.
