The Magic of Music

Most of us have experienced  hearing a song and having a flashback of a person or time associated with it.  Some of our first experiences with music enjoyment may have been listening to the radio or vinyl records. Hearing a song may remind us of a special person from our youth, or school, or a memorable time such as a wedding or party.  Many seniors today may remember listening to Elvis Presley, or the Temptations or Beach Boys.  And February 9, 1964, the Beatles had their American  debut on the Ed Sullivan show, as 73 million viewers experienced an iconic moment in music history!

Today, there are many  additional ways we can enjoy music besides the radio or vinyl records.  Gone are the days of the eight track or cassette tapes, replaced by CD's. And technology has given us other easy ways to obtain our favorite types of music.  Downloading music from popular online sites such as Spotify and Amazon music offer the ability to build your own playlist of your favorites to enjoy. Sites such as you tube have videos of artists performing  your favorite songs.
And for many, attending a live performance of your favorite artists, or the symphony or a musical can be a memorable experience!

Music has additional benefits for wellbeing.  Studies have shown that music can enhance memory and recall, maintain cognitive sharpness and improves focus and mental clarity. It can also reduce stress and anxiety and promote relaxation. Many people enjoy dancing, singing, or playing a musical instrument, offering  opportunities for socialization. Music can also give us comfort, as many hymns or praise and worship songs encourage us in challenging moments.

No matter what types of music you enjoy, take time to sit back and relax, reminisce and do something good for your health and wellbeing!   As the late Dick Clark once said, " Music is the soundtrack of your life" .
