Dating in the Senior Years

Dating Tips for Mature Adults

No matter how long it has been since you have become a single adult, starting to think about dating again can be a bit unnerving as well as exciting.
Finding love or companionship at any age has many benefits but there are a few things to consider when starting out.

Think about what is important to you. Socialization may be what you are looking for and depending on you interests, there are groups that would cater to seniors, for example, country line dancing, book clubs, pickleball league, or playing cards. Attending worship services may also be a way to get to know other singles.  Meeting others with common interests is a great way to get to know a potential interest to see if dating might be a next step.

Think about how you might be comfortable finding other adults who want to date or have companionship.  Friends and family may know of people that might be a good fit and introduce you.

Recently dating sites have become more popular with seniors as a way to meet new people.  These sites make it convenient to meet others with similar interests from the comfort of your own home.
Sites such as OurTime, SilverSingles, and eHarmony are just a few sites that cater to mature adults.  Review the sites to evaluate if they have a good rating for safety and success.

Create an honest and engaging profile to attract interest from likeminded people. Use recent photos that reflect your personality. Be specific about your interests and what you are looking for.

When using online dating sites, it is vital to protect your privacy and security. Never share personal information such as address, phone number or financial information too soon.  Use a strong password for your dating profile.

Be wary of someone who seems too perfect.  Unfortunately, there are people who want to scam others. Avoid anyone who asks for money, gifts or any personal assistance.
If you decide you want to communicate, start by messaging through the dating site before moving to meeting in person.
Face to face communication via video chat is also an option to use, in the safety and privacy of your home. This may help you decide if you are comfortable with this person.
And always trust your instincts.  If something doesn't feel right, if they are too pushy or make you feel uncomfortable, you can block them.

When the time comes that you want to meet in person, choose a public place such as a coffee house or restaurant.  Let someone know where you are going and who you are meeting. It is best to arrange your own transportation and certainly be mindful to limit alcohol intake to stay in control of the situation.

Dating again and finding compatible friends may take time, so remember to manage your expectations and enjoy the process.  You won't click with everyone you meet whether it be online or through others.  However you may make some wonderful new friends as well as find romance again.
